Limestone Creek was once a small blackwater stream that slowly flowed over the wetlands and swamp lands near this site and into the Loxahatachee River. As vegetation decayed along the bank, tannins leached into the water making it acidic and dark like tea or black coffee – hence the name “blackwater”. This 52-acre site with mesic flatwoods, scrubby flatwoods, hydric hammock, and mangrove swamp ecosystems, offers paddlers, fishermen, and hikers a view along two tributaries of Limestone Creek that still flow intermittently through the natural area during heavy rain events.
