Real Estate SEO – Google Removes HTML5 Video Thumbnails From Search Results

As of the evening of July 15, 2014 I noticed that video thumbnails in organic search results stopped appearing. He little while later they came back after a browser re-fresh but the next day they were gone again. This was not a browser anomaly. This was a comprehensive removal just like the removal of authorship images from organic search results. This appears to have gained the attention of a few people on some forums but has not widely been reported yet and is yet to be addressed by Google. I have reached out to +Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable to see if he can get any information from Google about this change. I wonder if Google will stick to their narrative that search results are improved on mobile devices by removing visual data like this or will they perhaps concede the point that this is a zero sum game which means every click to organic results is one less click to ads and that video thumbnails, just like authorship images, were taking away too many clicks and reducing ad revenue that they wanted to reclaim?
